Course Workflow

Important

The course uses a flipped classroom based learning approach. This means that the student’s own active approach to learning is key.

Learning Events

Contact learning events are organized only in the Hervanta campus. In addition to these, online sessions are offered. The kick-off lecture and the Q&A sessions can be followed online and they are recorded.

There are no learning events during the winter break (26.2.2024–3.3.2024) and the Easter holiday (27.3.–2.4.2024).

  • Kick-off lecture

    • Monday, 8.1.2023 8–10, TB109, Tietotalo, Hervanta.

    • Recording of the kick-off lecture.

      There was a technical problem in the recording configuration: the live-stream did not work and the video projector image is only partially shown in the recording. There should have been a side-by-side show of the teacher and projector. The NetBeans demonstration is recapped in Friday’s Q&A session (12.1. 14-16). In addition, the video was for a while in a wrong Panopto folder.

  • Coditoriums

    • In the weekly coditorium groups (exercise groups), you have the opportunity to get help from the teaching assistants with problems you’re experiencing with your tasks. Assistance is also given for solving the project work.

    • The coditorium groups are optional activities.

    • It may be easiest to work with your own laptop in the coditorium. Desktop computers are also available in the coditorium rooms.

    • The coditoriums start on Monday, 8.1.

    • The group primarily intended for English speaking students:

      • On Wednesdays 14–16, Zoom (meeting id: 640 6317 2298, passcode: 364833), Long Nguyen.

    • Assistance is available in English in the other groups as well:

      • On Mondays 12–14, TC215, Tietotalo, Hervanta, Iiro Sinisalo.

      • On Tuesdays 8–10, TC215, Tietotalo, Hervanta, TC215, Vesa Lukkarila.

      • On Thursdays 10–12, TC215, Tietotalo, Hervanta, Roni Kallio.

      • On Thursdays 14–16, Zoom (meeting id: 640 6317 2298, passcode: 364833), Kilian Kugge.

  • Q&A sessions

    • On Fridays 14–16, TB103, Tietotalo, Hervanta.

    • Recordings of past Q&A sessions can be found in Panopto. There will also be a live stream of the Q&A session on the day that it’s happening in the same folder, if you want to participate remotely.

  • Exam

    • Students can use their three exam attempts freely over the exam windows meaning several attempts can be used within the same exam window.

Study Facilities on Campus

In addition to the on campus learning events we want to encourage students to meet each other for example to work on the course project and based on the idea of peer learning. There are different rooms available for the students to use on the campuses. All such rooms that are available in Resource Booker can be used also without a reservation. Lecture halls and classrooms can also be used when there is no teaching or other reservations in them. Information on the facilities and making reservations is available in the intra.

Guidance and Support Services

Getting back to the campuses after a long strech of remote studying is exciting but can also feel overwhelming. The aim of the university community is that your studies progress smoothly and you feel well. Remember that there is support available for study guidance as well as coping with stressful situations. You are not alone! Information on guidance services is available in intra.

Flipped Learning

Flipped Learning or Flipped Classroom is a learning approach where the student studies the given subject first on their own or with other students. Afterwards, to support learning there are contact teaching events where the studied topics and possible questions regarding them are discussed together.

On this course, Flipped Learning means that:

  • Each week there are online material and learning videos available for study.

  • There are exercises to do based on the given material.

  • Coditorium groups (exercise classes) are provided to help with the programming tasks each week.

  • At the end of the following week a Q&A session is held to discuss the subject matter of the previous week together. The starting week is an exception: The first Q&A session is of the matters of the current week. If necessary, the material of the current week can be discussed in also in the later Q&A sessions.

Note

The video has outdated information about grading. It is mentioned that exercises and project amount to 35% and 45% of the grade, respectively. The weights have been later changed vice versa: Exercises and project amount now to 45% and 35% of the grade, respectively.
